Gun Safes

Gun safes are the preferred way to store and secure guns and firearms in the home and should be considered by every gun owner. Gun safes fill the need to keep firearms away from children, in addition to potential thieves.

Locks for gun safes can be found with a variety of features but those with combination locks are considered more secure than key locks, as keys can be lost or stolen. Combination locks with either digital interfaces (using a keypad), or manually turned interfaces (with a large dial), are available. In some models a key lock is combined with a combination lock to add an additional level of safety.

The locking bolts of the gun safe should also be taken into consideration. These locking bolts prevent the door of the safe from being pried open and operate even if the hinges to the door are removed. Well-designed gun safes with locking bolts are typically considered next to impossible to break into. A safe with seven bolts will provide adequate protection but more sophisticated models with additional bolts can also be found.

Gun safes are made in a wide variety of sizes with the main determining factor being the size of gun collection. Smaller safes are ideal if they will hold just pistols and can be hidden in many locations throughout your home. Smaller safes should be bolted to the floor for additional protection from potential thieves. Bigger safes are ideal for storing rifles and shotguns, but can be very heavy to move. If it's extremely heavy, a burglar will have just as difficult of a time moving it, so the heavy weight can act as an additional safety feature.
